A number of men have been arrested over what police believe was a gang-related attack that left two men dead and a third fighting for life.

Atem Atem, 29, and 22-year-old Ayuel Akuei died at a home in Wyndham Vale in Melbourne's west on February 11.

A third man suffered life-threatening injuries but police believe none of the victims were the intended targets.

A pet dog was shot dead, while four children and other adults at the home were not physically harmed.

Nine males aged between 17 and 22 were arrested on Tuesday and Wednesday as police executed warrants at multiple addresses across Melbourne.

All were interviewed and released pending further inquiries.

The investigation remains open and police say they have spoken to a large number of people and reviewed hundreds of hours of CCTV footage in a bid to understand the motive behind the violence.
