Australia hope to have Cameron Green back for the fourth Ashes Test at Old Trafford after he was ruled out of the third Test at Headingley with a left hamstring injury.
Green was confirmed out before the match start on Thursday morning, replaced by Mitch Marsh as the side's allrounder.
It came as one of three changes, with Scott Boland in for a rested Josh Hazlewood and Todd Murphy replacing injured spinner Nathan Lyon as expected.
Marsh's return marks his first Test since the last match of the 2019 Ashes, when he took his maiden five-wicket haul at The Oval.
In the time since he has improved significantly as a batter in the white-ball formats, hitting Australia to a victory in the Twenty20 World Cup in 2021.
But it is Green's fitness that is the main concern for Australia.
He suffered a "low-grade hamstring strain" in Australia's 43-run win in the second Test at Lord's, where he was forced to bowl 22 overs in Lyon's absence.
Australia have a sizeable gap between the Headingley and Old Trafford Tests, with the fourth match in the series not scheduled until July 19.
Team officials confirmed they expect to have Green back to full fitness by that point.
Australian officials also confirmed that the decision to omit Hazlewood was precautionary, with the seamer being managed on his return form injury.
Hazlewood entered the Ashes series with only four Tests to his name in two years, owing to side and achilles injuries, but has so far got through the first two matches unscathed.
With a short turnaround between the second Test at Lord's and third at Headingley, selectors did not want to put his body at risk of another injury.
Captain Pat Cummins had indicated in the days leading up to the Test that it was something Australia had to be aware of.
"The tour so far for him has gone as well as he could have hoped – no injuries, but he is kind of uncharted territory for the last year or two," Cummins said on Tuesday.
"He bowled 25 and 35 overs (in the first two Tests) which isn't extreme numbers.
"But again you weigh up this (Headingley) game versus the last two (in the series) and how he's tracking."
