Firefighters have battled a blaze at a tobacco shop in Melbourne's north that residents say coincided with several explosions.

Fourteen emergency service vehicles attended the Craigieburn building fire which was first reported about 3.30am.

Police said there were "reports of multiple explosions" at the scene, on the intersection of Smeaton Court and Bridgewater Road.

They described the blaze as suspicious.

Authorities on Sunday morning said the fire was under control.

Dozens of other fires have damaged tobacco shops in Melbourne and regional Victoria during the past year.

Detectives investigating the Craigieburn blaze on Sunday said they were probing "any links it may have to recent fires".
