Boy, 14, charged over fatal crash with stolen car

Emergency services had to cut one of the injured passengers out of the Toyota sedan. (HANDOUT/ACT POLICE)

A 14-year-old driver accused of crashing a stolen car that claimed the life of a teenage passenger will face court.

The teenager is set to appear at the ACT Children's Court on Thursday over his involvement in the territory's first road fatality of 2024.

He was charged with culpable driving causing death and driving a stolen motor vehicle after a two-vehicle collision on the Barton Highway in Canberra's north on Wednesday night.

Police allege the boy was driving a gold Toyota Avalon with three passengers that was stolen from a south Canberra suburb.

They say he ran a red light and the car collided with a Toyota Hilux just before midnight.

A 19-year-old and a 14-year-old passenger sustained critical injuries and one had to be extracted from the Avalon by emergency services.

The 19-year-old later died in hospital.

The two Hilux passengers were treated at the scene.
