Brisbane rake's season over, set for shoulder surgery

Brisbane hooker Cory Paix won't play again this year with the 2025 premiership-winner booked in for shoulder surgery.

The 26-year-old has shown great bravery over the past eight weeks to battle through the injury but with the club's finals hopes over a decision has been made for him to go under the knife.

The initial plan was to wait until the season was over but Paix will have the surgery early to give him a chance to start 2027 fit and healthy.

Paix, who is signed until the end of 2028,  has been a staple at the Broncos under coach Michael Maguire and is highly valued for his defensive clout that was key to the club winning the 2025 title.

His absence will give 32-year-old utility Billy Walters an extended run at No.9 as he targets a contract extension.

Walters played his 100th match for the Broncos last week in the 40-32 loss to the Dolphins and was one of the best on the field.

When he was replaced the Broncos missed his energy and craft and were unable to make the most of a 24-0 lead.

Walters gives the Broncos plenty of options and can also play in the halves.

His stint last year at No.6 late in the season was integral to the club's run to the premiership, even though an ACL rupture against Canberra cut short his year.

While he did not play in the grand final, Walters was recognised as a key contributor in breaking a 19-year premiership drought.
