A building containing the offices of a major British arms and security company has been vandalised in inner Melbourne with the words "Free Gaza" daubed on a wall.

The words "f**k BAE" were also written on the Richmond office block on River Boulevard on Wednesday morning, referring to UK arms, security and aerospace company BAE Systems which has offices there.

Front windows were smashed and paint splattered around the foyer.

Victoria Police said officers were called after reports unknown offenders had broken into a commercial premises on River Boulevard about 2.40am on Wednesday.

It is unclear if anything was stolen but the offenders caused significant damage to the business, police said in a statement.

BAE Systems Australia confirmed authorities were investigating a potential break-in and vandalism incident at its Richmond Location.

A company spokesperson said the safety of staff was paramount and directed further inquiries to police.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information that could assist the probe has been urged to come forward.
