A man has been seriously burned when his caravan exploded at a campsite in southern NSW.

The 38-year-old ACT resident received treatment for facial burns at Wagga Wagga Base Hospital before he was airlifted to a Sydney hospital for further treatment.

The man was visiting the Sandy Beach campsite just outside Wagga Wagga with his family when the vehicle erupted into flames on Sunday evening.

He was in the caravan collecting his phone when the vehicle exploded, police said. The caravan was fully destroyed in the blaze.

Police said the explosion was an accident and is not being treated as suspicious.
