Child abuse material charges laid after tip-off from US

Officers arrested a man after US authorities alerted police about online child abuse material. (HANDOUT/AUSTRALIAN FEDERAL POLICE)

A man has been charged with allegedly possessing explicit material, depicting both real and animated children, following a tip-off from the US.

The Australian Federal Police said it began an investigation in September following two reports from the US National Center for Missing and Exploited Children about child abuse material being uploaded to an online account.

The account was allegedly linked to a 28-year-old Sydney man, with police searching a home in the western suburb of Rydalmere on Thursday.

Officers seized child abuse material depicting real and animated children on a number of devices.

The man was then arrested at the property and charged with two counts of using a carriage service to possess child abuse material.

He is due to appear in Burwood Local Court on Friday.

An investigation, including analysis of the seized material, is ongoing, police said.
