Compensation talks between the Victorian government and the Commonwealth Games Federation are ongoing, almost a month after the state pulled out of hosting the 2026 event.

Premier Daniel Andrews cancelled the regional Victorian Games on July 18, citing a forecast rise in cost from $2.6 billion to between $6 billion and $7 billion.

Lawyers for the state government travelled to London last month to negotiate what the cost would be for terminating the contract.

Mr Andrews confirmed negotiations were continuing.

"Sometimes these things are not particularly pacy - they take time," he said on Thursday.

"I'm more focused on getting a good outcome rather than rushing it."

State and federal inquiries have been set up to investigate the cancellation of the 2026 Games, but Mr Andrews and Deputy Premier Jacinta Allan are likely to shirk invitations to appear before either probe.

Victoria's auditor-general is also working to determine the costs associated with securing, planning for and exiting the Games, along with assessing the quality of relevant advice to government.

Mr Andrews  maintained Victoria made the right decision to pull out of hosting the 2026 event.

"The costs have to be less than the benefits ... and the advice to me was that they simply weren't," he said.
