Design show has kids looking up, down and all around

"You see a peanut, we see a table," say designers Daniel To and Emma Aiston.

The first children’s design project from the pair behind acclaimed Australian design studio Daniel Emma invites children to look at everyday objects and imagine what they could become.

The show is open at the National Gallery of Victoria from Friday, and if the reaction of the first pint-sized visitors are anything to go by, it's set to be a school holiday hit.

The Daniel Emma studio usually makes everyday items such as furniture, lighting and accessories, and Aiston admits they were a little nervous that children might not find it exciting.

But with a giant sushi train of plastic objects for inspiration, soft 3D shapes to build with, and the opportunity to make a digital cake out of furballs, what's not to like?

"It's quite phenomenal seeing it all come to fruition, this is the end goal, to have the audience enjoying the activities," Aiston told AAP.

Merrick Awani-Grimwood, 8, wasn't paying much attention to the array of objects passing by on the sushi train - he was busy thinking up a design for an apple chair, which he conceded might turn out to be a bit lumpy to sit on.

But he gave the show a big thumbs up. "I like all the colours and I just think it's really cool," he told AAP.

Anna McMullen, 8, was working on a lemon bike and ice-cream truck, while Honor Moody, 11, was drawing ice-cream, a clock, and a toothbrush.

Ms Moody said she was interested in becoming a designer, and she appeared to be specialising early.

"I draw dragons and mythical creatures," she said.

But design is not always about drawing, according to the professionals.

"You don't have to be an amazing drawer or really good at the computer to be able to design - you can design in many different ways," To said.

Ultimately, they hope the project will make children aware that design surrounds them everywhere, all the time.

"Your toothbrush that you brush your teeth with has been designed, the bike that you ride to school has been designed," Aiston said.

Up, Down and All Around: Daniel Emma for Kids is on at NGV International until October 8.
