Diamonds coach not thinking future as World Cup nears

Coach Stacey Marinkovich won't let thoughts of her future beyond Australia's Netball World Cup defence compromise the Diamonds' lead-up.

And with no games left before next year's tournament, the experienced coach will get creative to see off the chasing pack.

The Diamonds beat New Zealand 68-58 in Wednesday night's final match of the four-game Constellation Cup series, which Australia lost 3-1.

Australia and New Zealand are set to share the No.1 ranking when World Netball releases the standings in December, setting the scene for a huge World Cup in Sydney.

Marinkovich is out of contract at the end of 2027.

"My job is to prepare this team as best as I know how," the 45-year-old said.

"What I lean into is the experts around the high-performance program, continuously looking at ways in which I can challenge myself.

"I don't get to coach a lot during the year and particularly when we have had less opportunities - it's certainly less than what I had going into the last marquee event. So I've got to keep making sure that I'm evolving.

"When you've got a group of players that you've had for a while, you've got to keep the innovation because you've got to keep them hungry and they're turning up and things are new.

"So that's probably where my focus is."

The experienced mentor, Diamonds coach since 2020, prioritises preparing her players over contemplating her job security.

"I remember when I first got the job, someone said, 'the sooner you go into coaching, the sooner you get sacked'," Marinkovich said.

"And that little key piece of advice is the reality of it. Football coaches go through it.

"But if I sit here and worry about what that is, I'm not turning up for the players. And then if it happened, I walk away knowing that I didn't give it all that I had.

"So that's my focus. Whatever happens as a result happens, but I need to know that I gave everything that I can to the group."

Incredibly, Australia won't play competitive matches again before the World Cup, held between August 25 and September 5.

Players have a break before Super Netball while there will be Diamonds training camps.

"We're going to have to be a bit creative in our camp in January and we've got some good planning to come with the high performance team," Marinkovich said.

"We'll have a good amount of time together, so it's how we craft it to get that purposeful time together.

"We've just got to be able to craft the way in which we create the match play that we need and it can't be just always against ourselves because we're very familiar with the way we want to play.

"So we need something that's going to just keep challenging and stretching that and we'll come up with a solution for that."
