The death of man who never returned home from a late-night dog walk in Geelong's CBD is being treated as a homicide.

The 40-year-old left his Western Beach Road home about 11pm on Thursday, Victoria Police said.

His wife awoke about 4am to find the dog had returned from the walk, but her husband hadn't.

The woman went outside to look for her husband and found him dead next to his car on nearby Malone Street.

He had head injuries and police were treating his death as suspicious.

Homicide squad detectives are urging anyone who saw the man walking his dog or heard anything suspicious between 11pm on Thursday and 4am on Friday to come forward.

They also want people with CCTV or dashcam footage to provide it to police.
