Eagles AFLW recruit out for season with ligament tear

West Coast coach Daisy Pearce says she's heartbroken for Matilda Sergeant after the former Docker was ruled out for the entire 2024 AFLW season with a knee injury.

Sergeant, who played 19 games for the Dockers between 2019-2022 before joining West Coast late last year, tore her anterior cruciate ligament during a training drill last week.

The 25-year-old had worked hard to get back onto an AFLW list after she was delisted by Fremantle in 2022 over injury concerns.

A standout season at Claremont in the WAFLW sparked interest, and the Eagles swooped with pick No.42 in last year's draft.

But Sergeant's career is again at the crossroads following last week's training injury, which will require surgery.

Pearce, who was announced as West Coast's new coach in December, was shattered for Sergeant.

โ€œWeโ€™re heartbroken for Matilda, itโ€™s devastating news for her and for our team,โ€ she said.

โ€œThe club will wrap their arms around her and support her through this difficult time.โ€
