Eels NRLW skipper Cherrington on dangerous throw charge

Parramatta captain Kennedy Cherrington has been referred straight to the NRL judiciary for an ugly lifting tackle for which she was sent off in the Eels' loss to Newcastle.

Cherrington became the second NRLW player in history to be dismissed after she and Madeline Jones up-ended Knights forward Laishon Albert-Jones in a spear tackle early in the second half on Sunday at CommBank Stadium.

The Jillaroos lock forward was hit with a grade three charge, meaning she must front the judiciary panel on Tuesday night.

It is Cherrington's second offence in the dangerous throw category.

The charged continued a horror start to the season for the winless Eels, who made the grand final last year.

They were pummelled by 2022 champions Newcastle 38-4.

Knights second-rower Caitlan Johnston joined Cherrington on the sidelines, sin-binned for a high shot on debutant Kelsey Clark in the 61st minute.

Johnston was charged by the match review committee for the tackle and faces a one-game ban with an early guilty plea or two if found guilty.
