A 71-year-old woman has died after being hit by a police four-wheel-drive in far north Queensland.

Emergency services were called to a Cairns intersection about 7am on Thursday with officers in the car also administering first aid.

The woman was taken to Cairns Hospital with life‑threatening injuries but later died.

It is believed three officers were in the police vehicle, which was turning at the Cairns North intersection, at the time of the incident.

Motorists have been told to avoid the area with part of the street closed.

The case is being investigated by the Forensic Crash Unit with oversight from the Crime and Corruption Commission and the Coroner.

Witnesses and anyone with dash cam footage have been urged to contact police.
