The elections watchdog is ramping up text messages and emails amid concerns of a low voter turnout in the Fadden by-election.
Early voting numbers in the Queensland by-election, triggered by the resignation of former minister Stuart Robert, are down 27 per cent compared to the same period at the 2022 federal election.
Australian Electoral Commissioner Tom Rogers said by-elections traditionally had lower participation rates than full federal elections, but it was just as important for voters to have a say.
"Typically, if someone casts their vote early in one election, they'll do so in the next one as well - and we're not quite seeing that here which makes us worry about low participation," he said.
Early voting centres are open across the northern Gold Coast electorate and postal vote applications close at 6pm on Wednesday.
The AEC has sent every Fadden household an official guide to the by-election, as well as using advertising and social media to get its message out.
“We’re also sending text messages and emails to Fadden residents we have the contact details for. It’s a reminder of their right and responsibility to vote,” Mr Rogers said.
“It's more communication than we've ever done for a single by-election."
Voting is compulsory and failure to vote could result in a fine.
Labor has been running social media ads taking aim at Mr Robert's involvement in robodebt, the former coalition government's automated debt recovery scheme which was found to be illegal and the subject of a royal commission.
"It's time to hold them accountable," one of the advertisements says.
Mr Robert has rejected any wrongdoing, pointing to the fact he was the minister who shut down the scheme and had not been referred to any authorities for further investigation.
LNP candidate and Gold Coast councillor Cameron Caldwell is widely expected to hold the seat for the coalition.
Labor is running nurse educator Letitia Del Fabbro, who previously contested last year's election.
Thirteen candidates are on the ballot paper for Saturday's Fadden by-election.
