Controversial former AFL players' agent Ricky Nixon is too broke to pay his lawyers in a fight against assault charges.
Nixon was due to contest two charges in Melbourne Magistrates Court next month.
But the case has been pushed back to next year after his lawyers argued he didn't have the money to afford representation at the scheduled hearing.
The 60-year-old is charged with throwing a missile - an Australia post package - and assaulting a man in Port Melbourne in March 2022.
Nixon, who appeared in court on Friday, is set to argue self-defence when fighting the charges.
His lawyer refused to provide police with specifics of Nixon's finances, arguing it was not in the interests of the public or Victoria Police to have that information.
She said given the nature of Nixon's self-defence argument, it was not appropriate he be left to represent himself in the hearing.
Police opposed an adjournment of the case, noting the additional stress to the alleged victim who has been preparing themselves for the hearing, and for witnesses to be called.
Three police and five civilian witnesses were expected to be called over two days in early September.
Magistrate Rohan Lawrence, who viewed details of Nixon's finances, determined he would not be able to fund defence representations for the September hearing and it would be improper for him to represent himself.
He suggested a November date would be suitable for the hearing to be pushed back but the court calendar could not fit in the case until at least February, he said.
Nixon's lawyers have previously fought to have the case delayed until November, citing his work commitments doing health checks in the community.
But he was told most people have to fit work around their court requirements, not the other way.
Nixon is due back in court on February 8, 2024.
