Sound the fashion alarm! Style crowd forced to evacuate

Was it the fashion alarm going off?

On day three of Australian Fashion Week in Sydney, fashionistas at the Iordanes Spyridon Gogos show in Paddington had to briefly evacuate the UNSW Galleries building when a fire alarm sounded.

It had the audience wondering if the disruption was all part of the show: for several minutes models continued to walk the runway as the alarm sounded.

Among them was a male model in a bright blue dress, baseball cap and mules, who was unflappable despite the noise.

With the crowd converging outside, two fire trucks arrived, and firefighters quickly discovered that an automatic alarm system had been activated by "non-fire activity".

Was it the fashion police at work?

The show restarted a short time later, leaving one to wonder what Miranda Priestly would have said about the unscheduled interruption.

The disruption wasn't the only bizarre element of the Iordanes Spyridon Gogos show, with one model carrying another across his shoulders, before dragging her across the floor.

Perhaps stone age style is having a moment, and after several millennia in the back of the wardrobe, the loincloth is making a comeback?

There have been other strange goings on: earlier in the week, a Sydney beachgoer was just hoping for a brief dip, when he descended the stairs at Tamarama beach and inadvertently walked into the COMMAS fashion show.

Whatever is happening on the Fashion Week runways, harbourside city street style is more vibrant than usual, with shows attracting Sydney's most experimental fashionistas.

Earlier on Thursday, Christian Kimber showed his latest menswear collection at the event's new harbourside home, the Museum of Contemporary Art.

Wednesday night saw the industry's up-and-coming designers showcase with a group show titled The Innovators, from TAFE NSW's Fashion Design Studio.

Fashion Week runs until Friday.
