Federal Labor MP Luke Gosling has been arrested by Northern Territory police over an alleged assault.

Mr Gosling, the member for the Darwin-based seat of Solomon, was arrested on Thursday over the alleged assault of NT Administrator David Connolly earlier in July.

"Investigations began last week and police arrested the 54-year-old earlier this morning and he remains in custody," NT Police said in a statement.

The incident was alleged to have happened at the NT Thailand Grand Festival in Darwin.

The NT administrator is a position similar to a state governor and Mr Connolly was sworn into the role in February.

Mr Gosling, a retired army officer, has represented Solomon since 2016.
