Fire threat reduced in Alice Springs

The threat from a bushfire is burning near homes in Alice Springs has reduced. (HANDOUT/BUSHFIRES NT)

A bushfire burning near an Alice Springs suburb has been downgraded.

The blaze at The Fairway in Desert Springs initially sparked an emergency warning and an evacuation order on Friday before the threat reduced.

It posed a threat to lives and homes in the area.

But the NT Fire and Rescue Service said while the fire was still spreading on more than one front and was not fully contained, the threat had reduced.

"You can resume normal activities," local residents were told.

The service said smoke from the blaze could still be impacting visibility in the area and active fire could be close to roadsides.

"For the safety of firefighting crews and other vehicles, drivers in the area are urged to slow down, turn on headlights and drive safely for the conditions," the updated advice said.
