Football Ferns unfazed after hotel fire drama

The Football Ferns insist they are focused on their next Women's World Cup task despite a night-time evacuation from their burning hotel.

A 34-year-old has been arrested by New Zealand police and charged with burglary and arson after an attack on Auckland's Pullman Hotel on Saturday evening.

Players and staff from New Zealand's national women's football side were among the guests at the Pullman who were forced onto the streets at about 8pm.

The NZ Herald reported they had to dash out of a fire exit through thick smoke, while news outlet Stuff reported that eight fire trucks responded to the emergency.

“One of the fire exits was a bit smoky but the majority of us got down the other safe exit and we exited the building perfectly fine,” player CJ Bott said.

Players were able to return to the hotel after the small fires were put out.

New Zealand Football (NZF) do not believe the Football Ferns or the tournament were deliberately targeted.

The team trained as normal on Sunday morning in Auckland.

"All of the players and staff are well and healthy. Trained well today in the sunshine, which was welcome as well, and are looking in good shape," NZF chief executive Andrew Pragnell said.

The team are waiting to learn whether they will be able to remain at the hotel.

Saturday's blaze follows the death of three people in a shooting incident in Auckland's city centre last Thursday, ahead of the opening game of the tournament across town at Eden Park.

“When something like this happens, be it in the World Cup or otherwise, these things are concerning,” Pragnell said.

"The way the New Zealand police have reacted in both instances - we have had some big events in the last few days - has been incredible.”

The Norway team, who were staying on the same block as the construction site where the shooting took place, were kept in lockdown on Thursday morning as a precaution.

Coach Hege Riise said the incident did not impact the team, which lost 1-0 in a shock result to New Zealand in the tournament opener.

The Football Ferns are next in action on Tuesday against Philippines in Wellington.
