Six people are in hospital after a fiery multi-vehicle crash involving a United States army tank in central Queensland.
Police set up a large exclusion zone following the collision on the Bruce Highway near Rockhampton on Wednesday morning.
The vehicles involved included a B-double truck, a semi-trailer carrying the military tank, a flatbed truck carrying two caravans, three cars, and a 4WD towing a caravan.
Emergency crews arrived to find three vehicles on fire and four others badly damaged, police said.
A spokesperson for the Department of Defence said it was understood the truck involved had been carrying a United States Abrams tank.
War games involving defence forces from Australia, the United States and other nations are set to get underway later this week with the bulk of the Talisman Sabre exercises to be held in regional Queensland.
Truck driver Charitha Shivamka told Seven News he had to press on the brakes when a car cut in front of him.
"There was a car right in front of me and it all just piled up," Mr Shivamka said.
Footage taken at the scene showed firefighters hosing down flames and a plume of thick black smoke stretching towards the sky.
Six people were taken to Rockhampton and Gladstone hospitals, including three with suspected spinal injuries.
The crash triggered grassfires that were quickly contained by Queensland Fire and Emergency Services.
Anyone with dashcam footage has been urged to come forward.
