A 12-year-old girl has drowned and another has been rescued while swimming at Victoria's Bellarine Peninsula.

The girls were swimming at Collendina near Ocean Grove about 6pm on Tuesday when they got into difficulty in the water, Victoria Police said.

A passer-by ran in and was able to rescue one of the girls, bringing her back to shore.

The police airwing helped bring the second 12-year-old back to shore, where CPR was performed on her but she could not be revived and died at the scene.
