Oscar-winning American actor Renee Zellweger has touched down for the Australian premiere of the final instalment of the Bridget Jones film franchise.

The two-time Academy Award winner is back in the shoes of the beloved character for the fourth time in more than two decades.

Zellweger joined co-stars Chiwetel Ejiofor and Leo Woodall and director Michael Morris in Sydney on Sunday to introduce Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy to Australian audiences.

12 Years A Slave star Ejiofor and One Day actor Woodall are newcomers to the long-running romantic comedy series.

Created by novelist Helen Fielding during the 1990s, the character was first brought to the big screen in the hit 2001 film Bridget Jones's Diary and has since become a cultural icon.

The final chapter in the series chronicles Bridget's life following the death of her husband Mark Darcy (Colin Firth), with the now 51-year-old Bridget dipping a toe into the dating world and meeting 29-year-old Roxster, played by Woodall.

Bridget's friend and former lover Daniel Cleaver, played by Hugh Grant, appears in the latest film, which also features Emma Thompson.

The final film in the franchise opens in Australian cinemas on Thursday.
