A hunt is under way for a man who stole a car with a baby asleep inside from a supermarket car park.

Police believe the thief waited for the driver to enter the store before jumping into the red Volkswagen and reversing out of the car park in Shepparton, northeast of Melbourne, about 2pm on November 14.

CCTV footage shows the offender stopping the car shortly after, after discovering the sleeping baby inside.

He was captured on camera picking up the baby before placing it in a box in the car park.

The victim returned and found the child before raising the alarm.

The stolen car was found the next day in the nearby town of Mooroopna.

Police have appealed for information about the crime and released CCTV images of a man.

He is described as being about 165 centimetres tall, aged in his 20s to 30s, with a slim build.
