Victorian senator Lidia Thorpe has suffered minor injuries in a car crash.

The independent senator was rear-ended while stationary in a vehicle at the end of last week in Melbourne and sustained minor inquiries including bruising and whiplash, Sky News reported.

Her office told AAP she was "in pain but is alright".

She did not travel to parliament this week on doctor's orders but is expected to return next week.

The outspoken senator had previously raised concerns about her safety and revealed she has formal protection.

She is a leading campaigner for Blak sovereignty and for the 'no' campaign against the Indigenous voice referendum.
