An Indigenous inmate has died in hospital after suffering a medical episode at a prison in Western Australia.

The 51-year-old man was admitted to Fiona Stanley Hospital on Thursday for treatment following a medical episode at Perth's maximum security Hakea Prison.

He died in the hospital on Monday.

Police will prepare a mandatory report for the coroner.
