Kamala Harris the subject of false claims about US election fraud

Claims Kamala Harris only won in states where voter ID wasn't required are false. (EPA PHOTO)

What was claimed

Every state Kamala Harris won did not require voter identification.

Our verdict

False. Ms Harris lost in at least one state that does not require voter ID and won some states that do.

AAP FACTCHECK - False claims have emerged on social media that every state Kamala Harris won in the 2024 US Presidential election was one in which voter identification wasn't required.

The election results show that while Vice President Harris did win some states where voter ID isn't required, she also lost in some states that don’t require voter ID and won in some states that do.

Posts on Facebook appeared after Donald Trump won the election and Ms Harris conceded defeat.

False claims about voter fraud in the US election are being spread online.

Unfounded claims of mass voter fraud were rampant following Trump’s 2020 defeat.

“FURTHER DNC CHEATING PROOF IS REVEALED IN THE RESULT! Every State that the DNC candidate Kamala Harris won was one of those that did not require Voter ID”, one post from New Zealand reads.

The post features a photo of a tweet showing a map of 2024 election results next to a map showing different voter ID laws in the US.

However, the claim in the post is not correct.

Some US states don't require any ID to encourage voting, while others do.

Voter ID laws in the US differ from state to state, with some states not requiring any ID, while others require either photo identification or some other form of ID.

Harris won Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Virginia, and Washington, all of which require some sort of personal identification before voting.

She also won New Hampshire and Rhode Island where photo ID is required before casting a ballot.

Harris failed to win the crucial swing state of Pennsylvania and is on track to lose Nevada, neither of which require any ID when voting.

The Verdict

False - The claim is inaccurate.
