A male kayaker in his 20s has died after an emergency incident off the coast of Western Australia's capital Perth.

State police said late on Sunday they responded to a St John Ambulance Western Australia report of the emergency about 1.20pm local time.

The incident, off the coast of Dawesville south of Perth, involved an unresponsive male on a kayak, WA police said.

Water police deployed a rescue vessel and helicopter to the co-ordinates of an activated EPIRB after authorities in Canberra notified local police the beacon had alarmed about 2.4km off the coast.

Police said the rescue boat crew, on arrival, found the unresponsive male who could not be revived.

It was believed he was one of two people kayaking and became unresponsive while in the water diving, police said.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
