A man has been arrested after an incident at a Melbourne high school that left another man with likely stab wounds.

The attacker, reportedly a staff member, allegedly assaulted the victim, reportedly the principal, at Keysborough Secondary College at about 3pm on Tuesday.

"The victim was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries consistent with a stabbing," police said in a statement.

The alleged attacker was arrested at the scene with police confirming the two men were known to each other.

The school did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Aerial footage showed multiple police cars at the school and a man on a stretcher being loaded into the back of an ambulance.

Local media reported that the school was locked down in the wake of the incident.
