Detectives are investigating after a man was killed and several people injured in a major four-car crash in eastern Victoria.
Emergency services were called to a multiple vehicle collision on Princes Freeway at Hernes Oak, in Victoria's Latrobe Valley, about 5.20pm on Friday.
Police said the male passenger of one of the vehicles, who is yet to be formally identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The female driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
A woman and three children travelling in another car were taken to hospital for assessment.
A male driver, who was the sole occupant of another vehicle, was also taken to hospital for assessment.
A female passenger of a fourth vehicle was airlifted to hospital with critical injuries.
Police said the male driver, a 31-year-old Moe man, was arrested and is assisting police with their inquiries.
Police were told two other male passengers fled the scene on foot.
Investigators are working to establish the exact circumstances of the collision.
