A man has died after a "brutal and violent attack" at a suburban shopping centre, with police appealing for information from the public to help identify his assailant.

A 45-year-old man is in custody, assisting detectives with inquiries.

Queensland Police declared a crime scene at the Manly Heights Shopping Village in suburban Brisbane in the early hours of Sunday after the victim was found there.

His death is being treated as suspicious, with a large police operation at the scene and officers door-knocking to seek information on the attack.

Police have urged anyone who was in the area at the time, especially those with CCTV or dashcam footage, to contact them.

Detective Inspector Wayne Francis told reporters on Sunday police believed the man lived locally and was on foot when he suffered the "brutal and violent attack".

Police could not identify the man at this stage as detectives were still working to contact next of kin, he said.

The 45-year-old man being questioned was in custody for other reasons but an active line of investigation was whether those matters were linked to the murder investigation, Det Insp Francis said.
