An alleged gunman has been found hiding underwater in a pond after a fatal shooting at a suburban park sparked a man hunt.

The dramatic arrest unfolded after a man was fatally shot in the chest at Beenleigh, south of Brisbane, police said.

Emergency services were called to Hugh Muntz Park about 10:40pm on Tuesday, following reports a man had been shot.

The 35-year-old man was found with a gunshot wound to his chest.

Despite efforts to revive him, he was declared dead at the scene, Detective Acting Superintendent Paul Fletcher said.

Police launched a search for a stolen white Kia Stonic sedan seen in the area at the time of the shooting, tracking the vehicle to the northern Gold Coast about 1.30am.

"After a short pursuit a successful tyre deflation device was acted on this vehicle, which made the vehicle stop in the Hope Island area," Det Fletcher told reporters on Wednesday.

The driver fled into bushland and dog squad officers swept the area before arresting a 22-year-old Beenleigh man found "hiding underwater amongst the reeds" near Saltwater Park.

A firearm was found nearby and ammunition was in the man's possession, police said.

"I would like to commend the police who acted bravely and swiftly to bring this matter under control in a very short space of time," Det Fletcher said.

"I also commend the dog squad officers that conducted a search in bushland at night with an armed offender and bringing that person into custody

Police have declared a secondary crime scene at the vehicle.

Police were working to establish whether the two men were known to each other, Det Fletcher said.

Anyone with information or dash cam footage should contact police.
