A search is under way for the driver of a black SUV who police say fired shots at three men in Sydney's west, injuring one.

Officers have established a crime scene at Blackfriar Place in Wetherill Park after Friday night's shooting, in which an 18 year-old man was injured.

Police said on Saturday the man was standing alongside a ute with another two men when shots were fired from a black SUV as it drove past them just after 7pm on Friday.

The 18 year-old went to a nearby hospital with gunshot injuries and remains in a stable condition.

The ute has been seized by police for further examination.

An investigation is now under way and police are appealing for anyone with information about the shooting to come forward.
