A man has been jailed after admitting to animal cruelty against a deer, a fox and a guinea pig.

The 33-year-old from Gippsland in Victoria's east was filmed committing and encouraging acts against the animals in 2019 and 2020.

Victoria's Office of the Conservation Regulator said he caused horrific injuries to a deer by pulling it by its ears, kicking it and stabbing it with a hunting knife.

The regulator said he also tormented a fox cub and assisted another man to use a guinea pig as live bait to train hunting dogs.

On Tuesday, he was sentenced to four months behind bars after pleading guilty to three charges.

A male co-offender was convicted but not sentenced to jail time due to personal circumstances and was instead fined $4000.

Chief Conservation Regulator Kate Gavens said any crime against wildlife was taken seriously.

"This court result should serve as a warning to anyone that animal cruelty comes with consequences," Ms Gavens said.

Anyone with information about crimes against animals is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers Victoria.
