A Melbourne man has been charged with child homicide and murder over the death of a baby boy.

The infant was found unresponsive by paramedics about 4am on January 19 at a Werribee home and taken to hospital where he was assessed to have significant assault-related injuries.

He died the following morning.

Police were contacted and the death was deemed suspicious.

Detectives charged the Hillside man and he is due to appear in Melbourne Magistrates Court.

The 29-year-old was known to the baby but was not the biological father, police said in a statement.
