Police have shot a man who allegedly threatened officers with a knife following a suspected fatal stabbing north of Brisbane.

Queensland police were called to support paramedics at a property on Running Creek Road in Kilkivan on Friday afternoon following reports of a disturbance.

They arrived to find a 55-year-old Kilkivan man with critical stab wounds.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

Police shot a 42-year-old Kilkivan man in the torso after he allegedly threatened them with a knife.

The man, who police confirmed was relative of the other man, was airlifted to Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a critical condition.

A crime scene has been declared as investigations continue.

Acting Superintendent Paul Algie said the event was very significant for the small rural community.

"Everybody in Kilkivan either knows one another or it's like six degrees of separation," Supt Algie told reporters on Saturday.

"This is a very shocking thing."

This matter will be investigated by the Ethical Standards Command.
