A man has been shot dead in what police believe was a targeted attack in Melbourne's northwest.

Police and paramedics were called to a home on Tenterfield Drive in Burnside Heights about 9.10pm on Friday following reports of a man suffering a gunshot wound.

"The victim, a 34-year-old from Wallan, died at the scene," a police spokeswoman said.

Homicide detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death but do not believe the incident to be a random attack.

Police have urged anyone with information to contact CrimeStoppers.
