What was claimed

A video shows NSW Premier Chris Minns revealing one of the Bondi Beach shooters was an Indian national.

Our verdict

False. The premier didn't say this, the audio has been manipulated.

AAP FACTCHECK - A manipulated video falsely showing a state premier sharing then-unconfirmed details about the Bondi Beach mass shooting has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times online.

The video appears to show NSW Premier Chris Minns explaining that one of the attackers was an Indian national, but the audio has been fabricated.

The video was shared in an X post on the morning of December 16 and shows Mr Minns addressing reporters at a press conference.

"In a critical development following the Sydney-Bondi attack, India's external affairs minister, Jaishankar, has spoken with Australian Foreign Minister Wong," Mr Minns appears to say.

"Minister Jaishankar expressed India's deep condolences and, after it was established that the attacker was an Indian national, he directly conveyed India's full support and cooperation into the ongoing inquiry."

The post's caption states: "BREAKING: Australia’s NSW Premier confirms India’s External Affairs Minister Jaishankar has pledged full cooperation after the Bondi Beach attackers were identified as Indian nationals".

While it is true that Senator Wong had been in contact with the Indian government in relation to the shooting, the Indian nationality of one of the gunmen had not been confirmed when the video was posted.

On the morning of December 16, Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke revealed the 24-year-old shooter, named as Naveed Akram, is an Australian-born citizen.

He also said the second gunman, named as Naveed's father Sajid Akram, first arrived in Australia on a student visa in 1998, but did not detail his nationality.

The following day it was reported that Indian police confirmed Sajid Akram was an Indian national.

The man studied in Hyderabad, where his family still resides, Reuters reported.

Using a reverse search, the original video in the X post can be traced to an ABC News clip from a December 14 press conference when the attack was first declared an act of terrorism.

Although the voice in the X video resembles the premier's, Mr Minns does not reveal the nationality of the gunmen at the press conference.

Nor does he detail a meeting between the Australian foreign minister and her Indian counterpart.

Instead, the premier provides the initial details of the terrorist attack.

The premier's body movements in the X video are identical to those at the beginning of the ABC video, confirming a voiceover has been added to include the then-unconfirmed details.

In both videos, after 28 seconds, the arm of NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon also enters the right side of the frame.
