A man has been charged with manslaughter over the death of a four-year-old child in northwest Tasmania.

Police say the 35-year-old was "well known" to the child, who died in Smithton on the night of May 31.

Officers have been investigating what happened since staff at a hospital notified police of the death.

The man from northwest Tasmania was charged with manslaughter on Saturday night and will face court on Sunday.

A 30-year-old woman who police say was also well know to the four-year-old has been charged with ill-treating a child.

She was granted bail and will face court at a later date.
