A motorcyclist has crashed his bike and died after trying to evade a police pursuit in Sydney.

NSW police tried to stop the man, who is believed to be in his 20s, in Strathfield in the city's inner west about 2.30pm on Monday.

Police said he failed to obey an order and kept riding, triggering a pursuit.

His motorcycle clipped a Toyota Corolla while attempting to overtake the car and the rider lost control and hit a power pole.

Police provided first aid to the motorcyclist until paramedics arrived but he died at the scene.

He is yet to be formally identified.

A crime scene was established and surrounding roads closed.

A critical incident investigation is under way.
