A man has been charged with murder after a dead body was found with stab wounds inside a regional property.

Emergency services were called to a Newark Avenue property in the Latrobe Valley town of Newborough, about 140km east of Melbourne, shortly before 5pm on Thursday.

A 61-year-old man's body was found inside the property with fatal stab wounds.

Another man, believed to have been known to the deceased, was taken into custody to speak with investigators on Thursday.

On Friday, Victoria Police announced a 51-year-old man had been charged with one count of murder in relation to the alleged stabbing death.

Neither man has been identified but both are believed to have been known to one another, police said.

The 51-year-old man will appear at Latrobe Valley Magistrate's Court on Friday.
