Namatjira paintings stolen from home, police say

Police are seeking information after they say six Namatjira paintings were stolen from a home. (HANDOUT/SOUTH AUSTRALIA POLICE)

Six paintings by renowned Indigenous artist Albert Namatjira have been stolen from a home, police say.

The Australian outback landscape artworks were taken during a break-in at Glenelg East in Adelaide on October 13, officers alleged.

Several opals and personal documents were also stolen.

South Australia Police says the break-in occurred through the back door of the Anzac Highway house.

Namatjira in the 1930s became the first Aboriginal artist to paint the land in western-style watercolours.

He grew up on a mission at Hermannsburg, also known as Ntaria, in the Northern Territory.

The style of Namatjira and fellow artists became known as the Hermannsburg School with their paintings displayed in galleries around Australia and internationally.

Police have asked anyone with information to come forward.
