Parliament to crackdown on military pilot poaching

Minister Richard Marles says the laws will put the obligations of defence force staff beyond doubt. (Darren England/AAP PHOTOS)

Laws to crack down on foreign powers poaching Australian military personnel are set to be introduced into parliament this week.

The laws followed a defence review triggered by allegations China tried to poach Western pilots.

An Australian citizen is facing extradition to the US, accused of conspiring to provide military training to Chinese pilots relating to aircraft carrier approach and landing.

Former US Marines naval aviator Daniel Duggan has denied these allegations and insists the charges are political as a result of the deteriorating relationship between Washington and Beijing.

Defence Minister Richard Marles has said former and current defence force personnel are aware of their national security responsibilities but the laws would put their obligations beyond doubt.

Mr Marles' office has been contacted for comment.
