One person was unnaccounted for following the fire and firefighters later found a body inside. (HANDOUT/FIRE AND RESCUE NSW)

A body has been found following a house fire on Sydney's lower north shore.

More than 40 firefighters rushed to a house in North Willoughby on Saturday morning where they found a two-storey property engulfed by flames.

Fire and Rescue NSW said crews immediately attacked the blaze from all four sides.

One firefighter burnt his hand while trying to access the second storey and was taken to Royal North Hospital for further treatment.

One person was unaccounted for while crews put out the blaze, but it took several hours before the property was deemed safe to search.

A body was found in the evening and it is yet to be formally identified.

An investigation is under way into the cause of the fire and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
