Western Australian police are investigating the death of an Aboriginal man who was unable to be revived after being found in his prison cell.

The 41-year-old was found at Albany Regional Prison on Thursday about 1.20pm.

"Prison staff provided first aid until paramedics arrived at the site," the Department of Justice said on Friday.

"The man was transferred to the Albany Health Campus but was unable to be revived."

WA Police will investigate and provide a report to the coroner.
