An internal investigation has been launched after a police academy trainee allegedly raped a fellow recruit.

NSW Police said they received a report on Sunday of the alleged sexual assault at their academy in Goulburn.

The alleged female victim, a student at the academy, is receiving welfare support from staff, a police spokeswoman said.

"A male student at the academy has been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation," the spokeswoman said.

When asked about the report, NSW Premier Chris Minns said the reports were very concerning and his thoughts were with the alleged victim.

"The NSW Police fraternity will be working with and supporting ... the alleged victim involved," Mr Minns said.

No charges have been laid in relation to the incident.

Incentives have been boosted in recent years to get more recruits into the academy to bolster flagging numbers in the force.

In March 2024, the state government started paying recruits during their 16-week courses at the academy to try and help fill a massive shortfall in officers.

While graduate numbers have increased in recent years, there were still more than 2400 full-time vacancies in the force's ranks in September 2025.

Culture issues within NSW Police have also been widely probed in a bid to retain more officers by ensuring a safe workplace environment.

"Bullying, discrimination, harassment, vilification and victimisation was experienced across all levels of the (NSW Police) with women most likely to be the target," the police watchdog found in 2020.
