A policewoman has been attacked and mauled by a dog during an arrest, before another officer shot and killed the animal.

The officer suffered multiple wounds to her legs and hand on Tuesday as police took a man in his 30s into custody at a house in Perth's north-eastern suburbs.

The man was also bitten on a leg and he and the officer were treated by paramedics at the scene before being transported to a hospital for further treatment.

"A male police officer fatally shot the dog to prevent further injury to persons present," a West Australian police spokesman said.

The dog was not owned by the injured man and an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
