Influential Port Adelaide midfielder Willem Drew has had foot surgery in another pre-season blow to the AFL club.

Drew's surgery was described by his club as a planta fascia release to alleviate ongoing discomfort in the arch of a foot.

The 26-year-old, who has carved a reputation as being among the competition's best midfield stoppers, hopes to return to training within a month, the Power said in a statement on Wednesday.

The injury to Drew, who is among Port's leadership group, follows Todd Marshall rupturing an Achilles tendon at training on January 13, leaving the key forward's season in jeopardy.

Port's premiership season opens on March 25 with an away fixture against Collingwood at the MCG.
