People are being warned to avoid a remote region as police hunt for a man after a woman was shot at an outback property.

Kenneth John Giles, 58, fled with a firearm from an isolated rural property north of Mullewa in Western Australia's Midwest region on Wednesday afternoon.

Tactical Response Group police have been deployed to the area, about 450 kilometres north of Perth, and continue to search for Giles on Thursday.

"It’s believed a man and a woman, who are known to each other, were involved in an altercation when a firearm was discharged at a residence," a police spokesman said.

The woman was taken to hospital for treatment for non-life-threatening injuries. The woman, believed to be aged in her 40s, was reportedly shot in the hand.

Giles is believed to be travelling in a white Nissan Patrol ute with WA registration 1BIY336.

He is described as about 173 centimetres tall, with a medium build, brown hair and brown eyes.

People have been told to avoid the area.

"If Giles is sighted, members of the public are warned not to approach and to contact police immediately," the spokesman said.
